This concert at Sweet Briar College will feature guest performers flutist Wayla Chambo and percussionist Peter Soroka with me on piano. Program highlights will include Morton Feldman’s landmark 1978 piece “Why Patterns?” for flute, glockenspiel and piano, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s “Für Alina,” a solo piece written for the piano in 1976, and the world premiere of my newest work “Aubade,” for flute, percussion and electronics. Most of these works are built on indeterminate processes, which means that certain aspects of the music change with every performance. Chambo, who is also an accomplished poet, commissioned “Aubade” as part of her ongoing Transcript Project, in which composers create new works based on her poetry.
The concert begins at 7:30 pm and will be preceded by a lecture on the music by the performers at 6:30 pm. Both will be in Memorial Chapel.
